Product Description

After finding herself at the centre of a very public scandal that left one man dead and another on the run, Lady Alexandra Huntington has exiled herself to her brother's estate and is content to manage his affairs. But the arrival of darkly handsome Collin Blackburn awakens her curiosity and her desire - and the advantage of being a fallen woman is that she can be ruined only once...After a promise sworn to his father, Collin Blackburn is compelled to seek the aid of the woman who brought about his brother's death in a senseless duel. Yet Lady Alexandra is not the shameless femme fatale he expected. In fact, Collin suspects she is guilty of nothing more than a hunger to experience passion, and the brawny Scot is certainly equipped to oblige. But the quick-witted, keenly sensual Alexandra has a few lessons of her own to impart - on life, love, and the delicious joys of succumbing to temptation...

Customer Reviews

Most conflicts were based on withholding information, inaccurate assumptions & doing something stupid for the sake of the plot.

Review by Jane Stewart, 2010-05-10

STORY BRIEF:
Damien arranged for John to see him with his hands under Alex's skirt. John challenged Damien to a duel and was killed by Damien in the duel. Since dueling was a crime, Damien fled the country. He occasionally wrote to Alex asking for money which she sent. Collin was John's half-brother. Collin has been searching for Damien to bring him to justice. Collin asks for Alex's help. She shows him her correspondence from Damien and agrees to keep him informed. She likes Collin and wants an affair with him, but he doesn't respond and returns to Scotland. Two weeks later, Alex goes to Scotland under the guise of purchasing horses, but her main reason is to tempt him into an affair.

REVIEWER'S OPINION:
There were several conflicts between the hero and heroine due to one of them "withholding information" from the other (for no rational reason). Collin was mad at Alex several times due to his "inaccurate assumptions" about her. More than once her response was to withhold information from him and not clear it up. The major climax happens when the "heroine does something stupid for the sake of the plot." Also, during the major climax, two important scenes were "told and not shown." I was annoyed with the lack of details.

I cannot enjoy a story so full of the above contrivances. In addition, I had trouble with the characters. I didn't enjoy reading about them. Alex kissed a variety of men. There was no relationship development with Collin. Apparently she just wanted him for his body. Collin was likeable at first but later became an abusive jerk.

DATA:
Story length: 279 pages. Swearing language: strong, including religious swear words. Sexual language: moderate. Number of sex scenes: 4. Total number of sex scene pages: 17. Setting: 1844 Yorkshire, England, and Scotland. Copyright: 2007. Genre: historical romance.

OTHER BOOKS:
For a list of my reviews of other books by this author, see my 4 star review of "Lead Me On" posted 3-23-10.

CAUTION SPOILER:
A small woman uses a knife to stab and kill a big, strong man. I doubt she could aim through his ribs to get to his heart, so it was probably done through his stomach or neck. I don't know. It was told (referred to after the fact) not shown, which bothered me.

TRANSFORMER HERO

Review by Sookie Stackhouse, 2009-09-12

I'm not sure exactly what happened to the hero after he gets married (at the middle of the book). He transformed into a sick & jealous jerk who makes the life miserable for her. It just makes no sense. He goes from a loving man to an abusive husband. Isn't the plot of romance books suppose to be the opposite? I'm not sure I'll read this author again.

GOTTA LOVE THOSE SCOTSMEN..... BRAWNY AND STUBBORN!

Review by M. Hebdige, 2009-03-09

TO TEMPT A SCOTSMAN
After making a promise to his dying father, Collin Blackburn has scoured England and France in search of the scoundrel that killed his half brother, John in a duel.

His search brings him to Lady Alexandra Huntington, the daughter of a Duke, the woman directly responsible for his John's demise. What he finds, is not the spoiled, femme fatale he has envisioned, but a fresh and beautiful, forthright girl, who is unbelievably outspoken and daringly shocking by her manner of dress and behavior, as she wears men's clothing and runs her brother's estate.

Alex was a pawn at the hands of the killer and is completely socked when she realizes that Collin believes her directly responsible for his John's death. Her reputation once ruined, she has retreated to her brother's estate where she does and says as she pleases. Wearing breeches and working alongside the laborers is something that makes her forget the censure an cruelty of the Ton and is her way of rebelling against dictated society.

Sparks fly between Collin and Alex from the moment they meet. They are both immediately attracted to each other, yet it is Collin who shies away from any association with Alex. In turn, Alex sets her cap for Collin and decides that she is going to seduce him, good and proper!! Some readers may be shocked by Alex's wanton behavior and how she practically throws herself at Collin at every opportunity. Yet, as the story develops, you realize her motives. As a fallen woman, believing she is going to be alone for the rest of her life, she decides that having Collin Blackburn wouldn't be a bad thing!

The combination of being born a bastard and being a Scotsman to boot, creates a resistance that makes Collin feel unworthy for Alex. He has fallen in love with her and because he doesn't realize what his feelings are for Alex, he becomes excessively jealous and possessive - and at times he is down right mean in his verbal delivery.

I became very aggravated with Collin's personality change in the third part of the book and his constant jealousy and mistrust in Alex. But that was the only spoiler in an otherwise marvelous first novel. There is plenty of action, excellent dialogue and witty repartee, great secondary characters and plenty of steamy, sensual love scenes that will leave you panting!! I cant wait to read Dahl's next installment in the manner of Alex adoring older brother.... The duke! I highly recommend TO TEMPT A SCOTSMAN! (Oh, and forgot to mention... Zebra's introductory $3.99 price ain't bad either!) ;-) Enjoy!

Formula

I was confused by the last third of this novel. Collin's personality changed to a jealous possesive meanie and I really liked him previous...

a disappointment

Review by M. DETWILER, 2009-01-12

I have to say the heroine in To Tempt a Scotsman seemed to be on some kind of super-duper love potion. She went after the poor hero, Collin, with a vengeance. I picked this book up after I had read the author's later book. I liked the book featuring Emma and Somerhart better than this one. My complaint with that book was that Emma was really dark==had a lot of emotional baggage from her childhood. But, that book was head and shoulders better than this one. Somerhart was a dream.
To Tempt a Scotsman seemed to be a series of vignettes wherein Alex, our heroine, attempted to get Collin to make love to her. There didn't seem to be any reason for her to want him other than she liked his body. She really did seem to be willing to be intimate with many men. She was inexperienced, but that didn't seem to be from lack of trying. I really didn't like her--she was hot to trot and that was about all.
If you like sex, not love, scenes, strung together, To Tempt a Scotsman, is the book for you. If you like some redeeming qualities in your romance novel characters, you will need to look elsewhere.
