I have to agree with some of the one star reviews that the story is very slow to build and the herione should have chucked her brothers. I learned a while back to read the reviews after I read the book, because of so many spoilers in the reviews. I like to read the excepts that Amazon provides, mostly back cover and then buy the book, read it, and then read reviews. I bought this book becuase I had read the first pages and was intriqued by the hero. I was intriqued by him through out the book. He is what kept me interested, but not really the love story. It was a little ho-hum. I think I would have a lot of trouble if I was being so thoroughly instructed by my lover during our intimacies as what was portrayed in this story. I will give this author another opportunity, but I do not consider this a keeper. I have to agree about the cover. It didn't really match the story.
More mystery than romance

I think it is fairly safe to say that a person who buys historical romance would like a book to lean more towards the romance end of the spectrum instead of the mystery. I like mysteries with a hint of romance, but when I buy a historical romance, I want romance. After reading the glowing reviews, I felt sure that is what I was getting.
Marietta goes to Gabriel for help when her brother is falsley accused of a Jack the Ripper type murder. She can't pay the huge fee of ten thousand pounds, so she will owe him three favors(in her case sexual). Marietta was a virgin who had never even been kissed, but goes dressed as a bar maid with Gabriel to collect information all the time. She allows him to feel her up and kiss her in public. This just didn't seem believable even if she was desperate. Gabriel was manipulative and not a very likable hero. Yes he had a horrible past, but that doesn't excuse him from his behavior. He tells the heroine that she is not his type, too skinny. He says lots of mean things to her, yet she falls in love with him. The sex scenes are ok, but that's all they are. There is not love between the sex, in my opinion. I really don't know why they fall in love. There is very little interaction between the two except when dealling with investigating. The bulk of the novel is solving the mystery.
This book just feel short for me. Maybe if the hero was more likable, maybe if there was more interaction not dealing with the case, maybe then I would have enjoyed this book. As it was, I was kind of glad that it was over.
SO BORING...a good sleep aid.

I'm only half way through this book and believe me I've had to force myself to keep reading. I don't get all the five star reviews. This has got to be one of the most boring books I've ever read. The chemistry is non-existent between the two lead characters, the one sex scene (so far in the first half) was such a snooze, Harlequin books are hotter, it literally put me to sleep several times. If you can't get to sleep, read this book! After reading all the great reviews I figured it was a probably a sure bet. WRONG! What a total waste of money. I won't be reading this author again.
Hummm...I wonder if all those 5 star reviews are the same person. It's inconceivable that anyone would like this book much less that many.
Boring

I must agree with the ladies who felt this book was boring. I am about half way through the book and bored to tears. I had to come and re-read the reviews for this book because I remember reading so many glowing reviews and I had to confirm that I was remembering correctly. Did I pick up the wrong book? No, I did not. The storyline is OK, but to me, there is no real chemistry between the characters. They seem to go through the motions in moving the plot along to try to free the heroine's brother. I am not really that particular about my books in the historical romance genre but I can't bring myself to care how this one ends.

This was a great story - interesting plot line. Fabulous characters - I felt like I knew them all. Wonderful writing! Twists and turns to the end... This book is a keeper to be read again!
