Watch it on Blu Ray!!

Review by Philip S. Mclaughlin, 2010-09-10

I don't need to go over the story of Halloween. But, I do need to tell you about the fantastic Blu Ray edition of this film. The sound is great, and the picture quality is unbelievable. The high def picture of this old film is astonishing. It is so sharp, crystal clear and life-like that it makes you feel as if you are actually there. You haven't seen the original Halloween unless you have seen it on Blu Ray.

You just can't beat the original...

There's not a lot that can be said about this awesome piece of horror art that hasn't been said: John Carpenter and company, with a small budget but a huge vision crafted a tale for the ages.

Simplicity is the key to this movie: Yes, the Rob Zombie remake (which I'm NOT dissing, I enjoyed it on it's own merit) gave us more of a backstory, humanized the character of Michael Myers, and gave us some insight into why he is and what motivates him...but the original proves that all of that wasn't really necessary.

What works in Halloween is that you DON'T know what caused this little boy to go off his rocker; it raises the possibility that the boogeyman is a REAL thing; Myers is more of a force of nature than a troubled youth that fell into madness; he is instead an unstoppable evil that wreaks it's havoc on that one night that all is free to roam the earth...

...and that's what's so frightening. There's not any gore to speak of, but the dread that the story, cinematography, and the chilling score builds in your heart is a palpable thing. The fine cast really puts forward the fact that terror has come to the little town of Haddonfield, and even the good Doctor Loomis, who's had fifteen years to figure it out, doesn't really know what the hell precipitated this rampage...nor just what it IS in the masked spectre that makes him what he is.

The simple fact is that he is OUT there, and he is looking for...maybe YOU.

What explanation do you really need?

Good nostalgic movie full of suspense

Review by Jonathan Hacker, 2010-09-07

I love how the movie was shot and I love the fall season and where it was shot at. It's a classic that you all probably know about. I'm still not sure if I prefer this over Halloween 2, but they're both good. After the first 3 (even though the third has nothing to do with myers), they go downhill fast. These are the good ones.

Why, Why, Why...

Review by Squirrel Bait '68, 2010-08-19

Okay...maybe I'm just dumb, but why wouldn't a 30 year anniversary box set contain ALL of the releases over the past 30 years, whether stellar, crappy or or just a decent waste of time? Why not include the extended "TV" version of Halloween along with the modified "TV" version of Halloween II (doesn't exist on VHS or disc), along with all the original theatrical realeases thru Resurrection (all in Hi-Def, with Blu-Ray counterparts)? THAT, to me, would be a true 30th anniversary box set. 5 stars for Halloween and Halloween II, 4 stars for Halloween H20 (#7), 3 stars for #3 (Season of the Witch), 4, 5 (never watched #6), and Resurrection (#8), and honestly 4 stars overall for the entire series--I know, it doesn't average out right, but honestly it is a fun series despite the huge cheesy acting factor in most of the films. Are they waiting for the 50th anniversary to do that? We won't care anymore. 1 star for what they've done to the fans with this ridiculous box set.

Sorry, but I'd rather collect these individually and put them in a regular box. :-P

Side note: has anyone ever noticed that Rodney Dangerfield's English professor (Dr. Diane Turner played by Sally Kellerman) in the 1986 comedy hit Back to School lived in the Doyle house (from Halloween and Halloween II)? LOL! No wonder they had a "dead man's party!" No trick here! Just a tiny piece of trivia treat. Check it out.
